About Mark

Lowland Architects is led by Mark White, an ARB Registered Architect and RIAS Conservation Accredited Architect with extensive experience working across historic and sensitive environments throughout Scotland and northern England.

Having delivered projects across a range of settings, from UNESCO World Heritage Sites to carefully considered domestic refurbishments, Mark’s experience spans project values ranging from bespoke small-scale works to developments in excess of £5 million. His practice focuses on the successful conservation of the built environment and the sensitive integration of new architecture within its existing urban and rural context. Alongside Lowland Architects' direct work, Mark also provides conservation accreditation support to other architectural practices on heritage projects on a selective basis.

Background & Approach

Growing up on a working family farm in the Scottish Borders instilled a practical understanding of buildings and craftsmanship from an early age. From constructing drystone dykes to repairing agricultural machinery, this hands-on experience fostered an appreciation for the materials, tools and techniques that shape enduring structures. That practical grounding continues to inform Mark’s architectural approach today.

The studio’s design philosophy draws inspiration from vernacular architecture — coupling modern thinking with traditional craft.

Lowland Architects is a conservation and residential architecture studio based in the Scottish Borders.

The practice specialises in the renovation of historic buildings, the extension and adaptation of existing homes and the design of carefully considered new architecture in rural and historic settings.

Our work is guided by a belief that architecture should respond to its context — respecting the materials, traditions and landscapes that shape the places we inhabit.

Studio Ethos

The studio’s work is guided by four key principles:

  • Respect for context, historic fabric and traditional construction

  • Careful attention to proportion, material and detail

  • Clear and technically rigorous design solutions

  • Architecture that is modest yet refined — Nothing unnecessary. Nothing overlooked.
