Stockbridge Townhouse Renovation

The brief was developed in close collaboration with the client from the outset: to restore the building sympathetically, recover what had been lost, and create a thermally efficient and comfortable family home without compromising the historic character that defines the property.

Restored Georgian drawing room, Category A listed townhouse — original features reinstated, Edinburgh

This project involved the comprehensive restoration of a Category A listed Georgian townhouse in one of Edinburgh's most distinguished residential streets. Designed in 1824 by architect James Milne, St. Bernard’s Crescent is a fine example of the Georgian terrace typology. When the client purchased the house, it was in a state of considerable dilapidation, with a failing roof, persistent basement damp and original features lost or concealed by later alterations.

The project began with a thorough understanding of the building's condition, history and significance. The roof required a complete overhaul: original slates were carefully salvaged, re-graded and re-laid where sound, with traditional lead detailing reinstated throughout. Persistent damp in the basement was diagnosed at source and properly resolved, rather than treated symptomatically.

Where original features had been lost, reinstatement was research-led. Original fireplace openings, hidden by later works, were carefully uncovered on the lower and upper floors. Sash and case windows were refurbished in place, traditional window shutters reinstated, and original floor coverings restored and retained.

Improving thermal performance was a central ambition of the brief, requiring careful integration of upgraded fabric and services into a Category A listed building.

The completed project delivers a family home that functions comfortably and efficiently, while reading as authentically Georgian. The building's original character has been rediscovered and preserved, with each reinstated element grounded in research and carried out with traditional craft.

The property sits within the Edinburgh World Heritage Site and New Town Conservation Area. Listed Building Consent was obtained from City of Edinburgh Council for all works affecting the historic fabric.
